Self Employment How it works

How it works

As you will be contracted to Gabem as a self employed sub-contractor we will set up contracts with agencies or companies. We will pay money due to you for your services into your bank or building society account.

You will need to submit an invoice to us for the work you have done before we can make a payment. Or, we can issue an invoice through a self-billing arrangement, reducing your business administration even further. The invoice we raise to the agency will include the Gabem margin; £20 per week (or part week) worked and will therefore be for a higher amount than your invoice to us.

If you are working as self-employed through Gabem CIS, we are required by law to deduct 20% ' tax on account' from your earnings (if you are registered for payment under the standard rate of deduction) and remit it to HMRC on your behalf. This helps ensure that tax due is provided for week by week, so you should not face a large tax bill at the end of the year, and may even receive a tax rebate.

For any assignments for which you are paid either through Gabem CIS or Gabem Solo, you will be responsible for filing an annual tax return with HMRC at the end of the tax year. You are also responsible for paying any tax due once HMRC has processed your return. We can help you with your tax return if you wish, for a small charge.

All self-employed workers must have Public Liability (PL) Insurance. You will need to send a copy of your schedule to us if you already have this. Gabem can assist you in arranging competitive PL cover if you need it at a cost of £2 per week (or part of a week) worked inclusive of IPT.

Personal Accident Insurance can also be arranged at a very competitive rate (see Frequently Asked Questions for details).

Getting started

If you have not already done so, register as self-employed (call your HMRC office or go online to www.hmrc.gov.uk). They will provide you with your unique tax reference (UTR) number.

If you wish to work through Gabem CIS you must also be registered for CIS as a sub-contractor. To register phone the HMRC CIS Helpline on 0845 366 7899. If you have previously held a CIS4 card under the old scheme, tell them your card number and ask whether you are already registered or not. Under the CIS scheme, Gabem will need to verify your registration in order to pay you net of the standard rate of deduction (20%). If for any reason you have not been registered for the CIS, we will have to pay you under the higher rate of deduction (30%) until we receive your CIS registration

We will contact you when we receive your completed application form.

When we have this information it takes up to 48 hours to set you up

We send you two copies of the services agreement between Gabem and you (you must sign one and return it to us) in a Gabem folder with other useful documents

You tell your agency or company the date from which you will work with Gabem, and we contract with them for the supply of your services.

Now you're ready to start!

The sooner you start, the more you benefit.

Send us your completed application form and ID, and you could be taking home more money in just a few days.
